Honggang Wang Named Editor-in-Chief of Influential Multimedia Research Journal

Honggang Wang is chair of the Katz School's Department of Graduate Computer Science and Engineering.

Dr. Honggang Wang, chair of the Katz School鈥檚 Department of Graduate Computer Science and Engineering, has been elected editor-in-chief of IEEE Signal Processing Society鈥檚 IEEE Transactions on Multimedia, one of the most influential journals in the field of multimedia research. His three-year term will run from January 2026 through December 2028.

An IEEE Fellow and IEEE Distinguished Lecturer, Professor Wang is internationally recognized for his interdisciplinary research spanning multimedia, networks and machine learning. Over his career, he has published more than 200 papers in leading IEEE journals and conferences, earning six Best Paper Awards at major IEEE events and the Best IEEE Multimedia Communications Technical Committee Journal Paper Award.

鈥淏eing selected as editor-in-chief of IEEE Transactions on Multimedia is both an honor and a responsibility,鈥 said Professor Wang. 鈥淭-MM has shaped the trajectory of multimedia research for decades. My goal is to maintain its tradition of excellence while expanding its reach into emerging areas like AI-driven multimedia analytics, immersive media and trustworthy content delivery.鈥

Professor Wang has held significant leadership roles within the IEEE community, including chair of the IEEE Multimedia Communications Technical Committee and the IEEE eHealth Technical Committee. His editorial experience is extensive; he previously served as an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Multimedia and IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technology, as well as on the editorial boards of IEEE Transactions on Big Data; IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology; and IET Communications.

From 2020 to 2022, he served as editor-in-chief of the IEEE Internet of Things Journal. Under his leadership, IoT-J expanded its readership, strengthened its reviewer base and launched new topical initiatives. For his efforts, Professor Wang received the IoT-J Outstanding Service Award in 2022, as well as multiple honors from IEEE, including the Outstanding Leadership Award and the Outstanding Researcher Award from the IEEE Communications Society鈥檚 MMTC.

Beyond his service to IEEE, Professor Wang鈥檚 research has left a tangible mark on multiple fields, including AI, Internet of Things, mobile networks, multimedia and cybersecurity, and smart and connected health. His projects, supported by more than $5 million in research grants from the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health and U.S. Department of Transportation, combine technical sophistication with a strong human focus.
