Dr. Jill Becker Feigeles, assistant professor at , has contributed a chapter to a new book from Springer Press, New Direction in Treatment, Education and Outreach for Mental Health and Addiction, titled 鈥淒eveloping an SBIRT curriculum in Advanced Practice.鈥
SBIRT stands for Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment, an evidence-based substance abuse screening intervention. Feigeles鈥 chapter focuses on presenting the model, explaining its theoretical underpinnings in motivational interviewing, and identifying challenges in teaching SBIRT to advanced practice students studying for their Master's in Social Work.
鈥淚 was trained to teach SBIRT during my adjunct appointments at Lehman College,鈥 said Feigeles, 鈥渁nd have been incorporating aspects of it into my classroom teaching at Wurzweiler. One of my colleagues approached me about a book she was putting together and voila! I was writing a chapter on the challenges of developing an SBIRT curriculum for advanced practice. I find the screenings very useful for social work students and the underpinning motivational interviewing techniques are seamlessly incorporated into practice.鈥
