Daniel Pollack, professor at the , recently published in APSAC Advisor, the journal of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children.
In the piece, Pollack argues that because of the pejorative connotations of the word 鈥渋nsular鈥 in the phrase 鈥渋nsular community,鈥 researchers should search for a better term to capture the social dynamics of these groups when discussing child abuse.
He suggests that it would be better to use something like 鈥渢ight-knit,鈥 which references 鈥渁 group of people united or bound together by strong relationships and common interests.鈥
鈥淎ccurate terminology and definitions are essential in social science research,鈥 he concludes, and making this change 鈥渕ight be a better choice for social scientists to use when speaking about these types of communities.鈥
