Van Meter Selected to Kavli Summer Institute Fellowship

Dr. Anna Van Meter, assistant professor of psychology at Ferkauf Graduate School Of Psychology, was selected for the Kavli Summer Institute in Cognitive Neuroscience. This fellowship, sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and the Kavli Foundation, is intended to train 鈥渢he next generation of researchers鈥 in the theoretical perspectives and methodology of mind-brain science, so that this knowledge can be applied to translational research related to mental health. The themes of this year鈥檚 fellowship are 鈥淏rain Circuits in Behavior and Cognition鈥 and 鈥淭he Stressed Brain.鈥 One component of Van Meter鈥檚 research will focus on the relation between emotion and cognition in people with bipolar spectrum disorders (BSDs) to gain a deeper understanding of how the brains of people with BSDs might work differently in evaluating emotional content. Additionally, Van Meter is currently conducting a study evaluating how stress, sleep dysregulation, and daily activities contribute to mood disorder onset in college freshmen, and will apply the knowledge she gains from the Kavli Fellowship to develop a new study to investigate whether maladaptive neural circuits are causing 鈥 or are being caused by 鈥 changes in mental health during this period of transition. The fellowship will take place at University of California, Santa Barbara.
